Popular Sustainable Programming Events Return

The Conservancy’s popular sustainable programming continues with the return of rain barrel workshops and the Kids Fishing Fest.

The Rain Barrel Workshops at Rivard Plaza are free events that teach participants how to create a 50-gallon rain barrel and capture rainwater for use in gardens, landscaping or vehicle washing.  That helps save money on water bills and keeps potentially polluted water from entering storm drains.  The first workshop was held April 25.  More than 100 people participated.  The next workshop is scheduled for July 25.

While the events are free, for participants interested in purchasing the materials needed to assemble a rain barrel, a limited number are available for $50 each.

The Conservancy again partners with the Sierra Club and Maxi Container to offer these workshops.

The 5th annual Kids Fishing Fest returns to Milliken State Park on Sunday, June 14 from Noon to 4 p.m.  The free event is open to kids ages 6 to 17 years old.

Last year, more than 400 participants learned the basics of fishing while creating memories along the Detroit riverfront.  In addition to fishing, the event features free snacks, prizes, a DJ and arts and crafts.

River Days Marks the Return of Summer for Detroiters

For almost a decade, River Days has been the unofficial kick off to summer for hundreds of thousands of Metro Detroiters.  The popular summer festival returns this year from June 18-21 with a special fundraising event for the Conservancy on the Thursday before the show opens to the general public.

River Days will feature more than 50 musical acts, an engaging Kids Zone, DNR activities throughout Milliken Park, more than 20 rides and games, a Taste of Detroit food court, boat tours, jet ski demos and so much more.  Guests purchasing tickets to the Thursday fundraiser will have access to unlimited rides, food vendors and a special performance by a major headlining act.

Watch for more information about River Days in the coming weeks as the Conservancy prepares to announce more details about the Thursday evening fundraiser and the names of the local and national musical acts that will perform each night.

In 2014, more than 150,000 people attended River Days.  For more information, visit riverdays.com.
